Latham Plans Northwest Iowa Technology Plot

I am proud to announce that Latham Hi-Tech Hybrids and Latham Seeds have teamed up to give you a first-hand look at corn hybrids and soybeans with the latest traits and technologies. Earlier this spring, our two companies planted in a technology show plot near Spencer, Iowa. The plot was created to give farmers an up-close look at the very latest hybrids, some of which are not even on the market yet.

We’re also working with Iowa State University to demonstrate planting, seed treatment, and soybean cyst nematode (SCN) management approaches. The plot is located at the intersection of B-53 and Highway 71, just eight miles south of Spencer, Iowa. It will include 34 Roundup Ready® hybrids, ranging in maturity from 92- to 115-days. Also showcased is Latham Seeds’ complete soybean lineup, including Vistive™, CystX® and Roundup Ready 2 Yield™.

The plot includes hybrids that are new to the 2009 lineup, and it will give farmers an opportunity to see these new corn hybrids and soybean varieties in real-world growing conditions. The opening view of the Latham’s technology showcase plot will kick-off with a grand opening field day on September 12, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The date is in the middle of the nine-day run of the Clay County Fair in Spencer. Join us to see the latest in cutting edge corn and soybean technology!

Scouting Alfalfa for Potato Leafhoppers: When and How

The beginning of July means potato leafhopper season is upon us. Many farmers question how to judge when leafhoppers have reached threshold and when spraying an insecticide is a wise choice. Here are some tips to help you in scouting your fields and arriving at a decision.

Scouting should begin five to seven days after the first cutting is taken from the field and should continue on a weekly basis (or bi-weekly if population counts reach close to threshold on a particular day). Check for stunting in the plants, yellowing of the leaves in a v-shaped pattern beginning at the leaf tip, as well as a “hopper burn” or red edge found on the leaf. This red burn can be easily confused with a Boron deficiency. However, finding the insect can confirm the cause.

The easiest way to scout for these insects is to use a small sweep net. Walk a W-shaped pattern in the field, and take sweep samples at five randomly selected areas. Leafhopper infestations generally begin on the edges of the field so be sure to include these areas in your checks.

To correctly sweep, test each of your five areas following these steps:

  • Swing the sweep net in a 180-degree arc so the net rim strikes the top 6 to 8 inches of growth. Each 180-degree arc is one “sweep.”
  • Take a sweep from right to left, walk a step, take another sweep from left to right, and so on.
  • After taking five sweeps, quickly close the net and count the number of leafhoppers.
  • Divide this number by five to get the average, and record these averages for each of the five areas in the field.
  • If alfalfa is two or more weeks from harvest, consider applying treatments when leafhopper counts reach five leafhoppers/ sweep (adults and nymphs).
  • For fields scheduled to be harvested in 10 days to 2 weeks, consider treating if hopper counts reach 10 leafhoppers/ sweep.

If you’re looking for another solution to help boost yields in your alfalfa fields, ask your Latham representative about the company’s new hybrid alfalfa with the msSunstra® technology. Latham Hi-Tech Forage hybrid alfalfa is shown to outperform conventional varieties by 10-15%. More information about hybrid alfalfa is also available on our website.

Latham Companies Take Fans Inside Cyclone Locker Room

Latham Hi-Tech Hybrids and Latham Seeds are combining forces to sponsor the Latham Locker Room show for the 2008 football season on the Iowa State Cyclone network.

The Latham Locker Room show is a post-game radio broadcast in which analysts, coaches and players share their thoughts on the game. The segment has proven to be very popular since fans are interested in reaction and opinions of the action immediately after the game. Many fans also tune into the game on their way home from the stadium. “We’re very pleased to sponsor the Latham Locker Room show,” said John Latham, president of Latham Hybrids in Sheffield, Iowa. “Our family has a long history of supporting Iowa State. More importantly, we know that many of our customers are fans — often listening to the game while doing field work — so we’re pleased to help bring this popular part of the program to them.”

The Latham Locker Room Tailgate Party will begin two hours before kick-off of the Cyclones’ first home game on Aug. 26, 2008. Tune into Cyclone football this season on one of the Iowa State Cyclone Radio Network stations below!
