“Subscribe to our RSS feed”, what’s an RSS feed?

Logo identification of "RSS Feed"Surfing through sites on the internet you may have come across an ad or side-bar saying “Subscribe to our RSS feed”. Just what is an RSS feed and why would you want to subscribe to such a thing?

RSS feed is a tool you can use to keep you informed about the latest updates to your favorite websites. This tool is usually denoted with the orange logo pictured left. When you subscribe, your email address is added to a list that automatically sends out an email summary of any updates that are added to the site. Delivery for these types of updates vary by email server. If you are an Outlook user you may find Outlook has created a folder specifically for RSS feeds. Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail will have similar approaches to delivering your updates. One more option you have is to have updates delivered via “Live Bookmarks”. This option sends updates to a tab at the top of your internet browser- just look for the icon. You can read site updates from the convenience of your email inbox or folder instead of checking the site on a daily basis!

The great part about an RSS feed is you can subscribe to these updates without disclosing your email information to the public. This prevents such things as viruses, spam and identity theft from finding their way to your inbox as a result of the feed. If you decide you don’t want to receive updates anymore, you can simply unsubscribe and your email address is removed from the list.
