Central & Eastern Iowa Crop Report: May 23, 2012

Corn moved along very well last week in the area. Some earlier plantings are in the E4-E5 range with side dress nitrogen and post sprayings beginning in some areas. Some reports of severe crusting, wind damage, and even some shallow root problems in areas. I would recommend taking a good look at fields this week and finalize your decision to replant some problem areas. Time and products are still available to make the most out of each acre. Most areas could use some rainfall to keep everything moving in a positive direction.

Soybean plantings are finishing up very fast with most acres emerging in 5-6 days with the warm temperatures. Most producers planted soybeans a little deeper this year as in the past. It looks to have been a good decision with the dry week we had. Recommend scouting this week and keep an eye on insect pressures.
