Southwest Iowa Crop Report: May 9, 2012

Corn planting was slow at best this past week with the spotty showers that moved through earlier in the week. Corn planting is 80-85% complete some corn already at the 3-leaf stage. The ear set of plant life begins at 4-leaf through 6-leaf, so remember to refrain from any field activity during that time. During this precious time of the plant cycle, any type of herbicide application with only take away from yield.

Soybean planting is getting off to a great start with 30% + in the ground and several fields beginning to emerge. Planting recommendations are 140,000 to 165,000, depending on soil type and varieties. Soil conditions and soil temp are prime to see the small plants jump out of the ground.
