Eastern Nebraska Crop Report: August 1, 2012

It continues to be hot and dry across the state with little chances of relief in sight. Latham posted a terrific blog recently about the handling of silage and the expectation of higher nitrate levels, so I’d encourage you to read it before harvesting and feeding silage. Another additional point I’d like to make is that although shallow kernels still have good protein values, they have depleted starch supplies. This can hinder the fermentation processes, so be sure to use an inoculant in these types of situations. Spider mites also continue to be a pest in this drought. When controlling them late in the season, follow label restrictions. Many of these chemistries have a one month pre-harvest interval.
