Unfortunately, not much has changed since last week. Conditions are still very hot and dry. Spider mites are very thick, and growers need to consider pre-harvest statements on insectide labels before spraying this pest.
On a positive note, I found a field of Latham® Hi-Tech Hybrids LH 6396 3111 in the hills, under dryland conditions, that still had good kernel depth and grain quality.
Also consider plant health, as well as grain quality, this year before harvest. Alpha toxins are a big story this year. Yesterday I helped a grower take out a field of competitor’s corn with a test weight of 47 and a moisture level of 22. It was also covered in red spores and rejected at Cargill in Blair.
If you’re around the Herman, Nebraska, area this Friday, join me for a plot dinner at the Legion Hall at 5:00 pm. Guests will include John Latham and Mick Morrel from Bayer.
