After reading this list, it appears you are reading the list for a variety of different jobs. This is true, but you are just looking a typical day for Latham® dealer Bob Plathe. Bob farms with his son, Bobby, and also works full-time at Ag Processing Inc. (AGP) in Algona, Iowa.
“All of my jobs keep me very busy, but I like it that way. It keeps me on my toes,” says Bob.
Bob began his journey in agriculture after graduating in 1980 from Iowa State University (ISU) with a degree in Farm Operations. Upon graduation he returned home to the family farm where he continues to raise corn and soybeans today. He’s proud to be a fourth generation Iowa farmer. In fact, the Plathe family was honored at the 2017 Iowa State Fair with a Century Farm Award from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
“When I started farming 1980, I bought Latham soybeans from a dealer,” says Bob. “I was always impressed with Latham products. They had great results then and still do to this day.”
Bob says he got to know Don Latham while serving on the Iowa Soybean Board, so that’s what first sparked his interest. Then he visited LathamSeeds.com and liked what he saw. After purchasing products for years, he decided to take on a Latham dealership about three years ago.
“When you work with the Latham’s, you just feel like they are your neighbors. You don’t find many companies where the president gives tours and explains what the products are all about,” he says.
In addition to farming and also working in agriculture, Bob also finds the time to serve on industry boards and be active in his community. He served on the Iowa Soybean Association board for nine years. He also has been a leader in the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Extension council and the Farm Service Agency Committee, as well.
Bob enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife, Carol, have two kids, Bobby and Emma. They enjoy watching Cyclone sporting events and try to make it to Jack Trice Stadium at least once every fall. He is also a fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. Bob is excited to visit Minneapolis, Minnesota for our Dealer Kickoff this year and watch the Twins play!
We at Latham Seeds are blessed to have dedicated dealers, like Bob. Spring planting season will soon be underway, so today Bob is sharing with us one of the meals he enjoys most after a long day in the field!
