Western Iowa Crop Report: August 1, 2012

A few ears of corn are already denting, which is a sure sign that harvest will begin a little earlier this year. However, most of the corn in North Central and West Central Iowa is no further along than R3 milk stage and R4 dough stage. Soybeans across the region are at R4 full pod & R5 beginning seed stage. We’re seeing a few flowers abort due to the extreme heat, but it’s too early to tell how the weather is going to affect soybean yields. Rain can help with pod fill. Thankfully, the Humboldt area received about 1 inch of rain last week.
