Central & Eastern Iowa Crop Report: April 11, 2012

We’ve experienced another great week of very nice weather in throughout the area. Producers continue to wait before planting, with only 1% of corn planting in the state completed as of April 9. Field conditions have allowed most of the anhydrous and fertilizer application to be completed. The forecast for this week is for some cool temperatures and maybe rainfall for later in the week. As this system moves through, planting will begin in full force.

Cold, rainy weather is a good time to double-check planter settings and make sure everything is ready to go. Regardless of moisture conditions, optimum seed depth remains at 2” for corn and soybeans at 1½”. Seedbed preparation and residue management can go a long way to insure that crops get off to a good start. This will be the most important pass that you will make this year across each field, make the most of it and reap the rewards this fall.
