Southern Minnesota Crop Report 11/2/11

Lots of tillage is being done now that harvest is wrapping up. Considering all of the challenges throughout the growing season, including extremely dry summer months and straight-line winds in August, farmers in this area were satisfied with their yields. Combining many corn acres was slow going, but many farmers were pleasantly surprised by the yield results. On a farm near Osage, Iowa, Latham® Hi-Tech Hybrids LH 5465 VT2 Pro made 205.5 bushels and LH 5155 VT3 went 205 bushels per acre (bu/A) with 16% moisture. Also in this area, LH 5033 3000GT produced yields of 196 bu/A with 14% moisture and LH 5228 VT3 went 194 bu/A with 15.5% moisture.

Soybean yields ranged from the mid-50s to high 60s this season. On a farm south of Osage, Latham® Hi-Tech Soybeans L2182R2 made 64 bu/A and L2084R2 made 63 bu/A. On another local farm, Latham’s L2084R2 beat Pioneer 91Y92R by 6 bushels (62 bu/A v. 56 bu/A respectively). Across the board, soybeans with the industry’s newest Roundup Ready 2 trait combined with Latham genetics are handily beating soybean brands with the first generation Roundup technology. Be sure to plant RR2 soybeans from Latham in 2012!

This area received 1.5 inches of rain last week, which held up harvest for 24 hours or less. Only a field here or there remains of soybeans. Overall, farmers were pleased with yields ranging from 55-62 bushels per acre and moisture ranging between 8-10 percent. Nearly everyone is running corn now. Moisture is running from 16-20 percent with test weight ranging between 57-60. Farmers are pretty much pleased as yields are higher than expected after a lack of moisture in late summer combined with straight-line winds in August.

Harvest is in full swing throughout Minnesota. Soybean harvest is almost wrapped up and growers have a good start on corn. For the most part, soybean yields are down as a result of delayed planting, early frost and Brown Stem Rot issues as a result of the growing conditions. Despite extremely challenging growing circumstances, four Latham® Hi-Tech Soybeans beans really stood out in southern and south central Minnesota: L1584R2, L1568R2, L1985R2 and L2084R2 were consistently at the top of our test plot program. We still have more corn test plots to go, but certain hybrids are consistently yielding at or near the top: LH 4567 VT3 (now selling the LH 4568 VT3 PRO version) LH 4796 VT3, LH 4999 VT3 PRO and LH 5155 VT3. We’re also seeing great yield results with our new VT Double Pro hybrids
